Types of Weight Loss Surgeries

1- Gastric Balloon

This operation includes inserting a silicon saline-filled balloon into a patient’s stomach which limits the quantities of food consumed by the patient and eventually leads to weight loss.

It is an endoscopy procedure where the patient is sedated first, the doctor inserts the balloon to the stomach using a catheter, then he or she will fill it with saline using an endoscope with a camera that allows them to see the balloon during the process.

The balloon stays in place for six months and then it is either replaced or removed depending on the plan decided by both doctor and patient

2- Gastric Sleeve

This operation is more invasive than the gastric balloon, as it includes removing three-quarters of the stomach using special medical tools. This operation is permanent and suitable for patients who have at least 40 BMI.

Patients are required to stay in the hospital for three nights after the surgery. Patients are to change their eating habits and diet after the procedure, usually, the operating surgeon will refer the patient to a dietitian to create a special program.

3- Gastric Bypass

This surgery is also a weight loss surgery that entails creating a pouch in the stomach and directly connecting it to the small intestine.

The swallowed food will bypass the stomach and the first part of the small intestine this process leads to suppressing hunger enzymes leading to weight loss.

Patients who go through this treatment usually lose 50% of their weight rapidly and feel healthier in a short time. Patients who undergo this surgery are those who failed to lose weight after trying non-surgical solutions.

4- Gastric Band

This procedure constricts the stomach which leads to feeling full after eating small proportions of food which leads to weight loss.

This treatment is reversible and less invasive than gastric sleeve operations. The surgeon will insert a silicone inflatable band around the top of the stomach which can be removed later on.

This procedure requires using general anesthesia and the recovery includes a liquid diet at first and gradually adding solid foods to it afterward.
